Dormant Accounts Training for Carers
What is the purpose of this Training?
The purpose of the Dormant Accounts Training for Carers Measure 2008 is to provide funding for locally based training programmes for family carers. The training programmes are aimed at providing carers with the skills necessary to provide the best care possible, to reduce the risk of injury to the carer and to help them cope with the emotional, psychological and physical aspects of their caring role.
The Carers Association welcomes the allocation of €572,000 towards training of family carers as recognition of the contribution that family carers make to Irish society. The contribution that carers make to society often impacts on the carers own health and well-being. This funding will start to address this issue in a practical way through training supports.
What type of training will be on offer?
The allocation of funding will be spent over the next two years in providing certified practical care skills training, patient moving and handling training and topic specific workshops which focus on other issues relevant to the caring role, to as many carers as possible. There will also be Stress Management workshops delivered in a variety of locations across the country and pilot personal development and learning initiatives through e-learning so that carers who may be isolated and unable to attend local training can be reached in this way.
We look forward to working in partnership with local statutory and voluntary agencies to reach and meet the needs of as many carers as possible over the project timeframe.
Who is this training for?
This funding is aimed at home carers and for the purposes of this funding home carers are defined as:-
“A family member or friend who is providing care on a voluntary basis to a person (of any age) who is in need of care due to illness or disability. It does not include people who are employed as carers, home helps or similar”
Of course there may be individuals out there who are being paid to work as Carers for example, home helps or respite workers but when they are not working are unpaid Carers for family members or friends and in such instances, these individuals will be eligible to avail of this training. Where the caring role is being shared between a few family members, all family members who are interested in availing of the training are encouraged to participate.
