A health check area was provided by Staunton’s Pharmacy, Ltd (Castlebar), O’Brien’s Unicare Pharmacy (Claremorris), and Boots Pharmacy (Castlebar/Westport) where carers had their blood pressure and body mass index checked. The pharmacies also had information on medication, blister packs, flu shots and general health advice.

A dietician and nurse from Abbott Laboratories were on hand to offer advice and information on nutrition and following a healthy diet. Paul O’Brien, Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor, launched an exercise programme designed specifically for carers which will be rolled out in 2012 around Co Mayo.

A designated pamper allowed carers to take time out for themselves with reflexology, shiatsu, and/or beauty treatments. All therapists generously donated their time to benefit carers. Six local crafts vendors were also on hand to add to the festive mood.

The Carers Association and the Mayo Volunteer Centre would like to thank all who took part in the day. The collaborative effort showed family carers that they are not alone. There are 5,440 carers in Co Mayo. We recognise the noble job carers do on a day-to-day basis. We honour them for their selfless dedication to the loved ones, neighbours, and friends that they look after. Thank you for being there, thank you for your care.

Luke Ming Flanagan and his family attended the Ploughing Championship and visited The Carers Association stand on the day with his children.

On the 12th June Roscommon Carers joined carers from other Centres to start Carers Week, this event was really enjoyed. Beautiful food provided by Cuisle and really good music as always provided by Pascal Brennan

On the 19th June Carers from Roscommon and Ballygar joined together for a day trip.  The morning started with tea, scones, and toast in the Prince of Wales Hotel with the usual kindness shown  to Family Carers by the staff of the Prince of Wales Hotel.  A short window of time was given to shopping.  Then down to the Shores of the Shannon where we boarded the Viking Boat for a scenic trip to the Hodson Bay by water, where a history of the area was delivered by the Boat driver.

A beautiful 4 course lunch was ejoyed by the group in the Hodson Bay Hotel where we were shown great hospitality and service on the day, all aboard again with lively chatter and we set off for our return journey.  The bus driver who was driving the community bus from the Melting Pot took all down to the bowling Alley and everybody showed their skill and sportsmanship.  Everybody enjoyed the bowling and thought that it was a great way to forget their troubles.  This event was part funded by the Community Foundation Funds allocated to The Carers Association Roscommon.

Maureen had set up the room for the day. The aroma when we entered the building of scented candles and essential oils was just so calming and relaxing. It was very easy to leave the recession and the caring role outside the door for a little while. “This is exactly the kind of day that Carers need and we are so glad that we had this opportunity to offer carers” says Bernie Dowling from The Cares Association Roscommon

Congratulations to Niamh Simon - Connacht/Ulster Carer of the Year 2010

The theme of this year’s Carers Association Pre Budget Submission was highlighting the great work of Family Carers being provided in the home.  The Pre Budget Submission asked that there would be no cuts to any payments to Carers.

Senator Leyden & Deptuty Feighean was in attendance at the presentation. They both conveyed their support for the work of Carers.

Pre Budget Lobbying

A delegation from The Carers Association Roscommon recently met with local Minister, Michael Finneran TD to discuss pre-Budget issues.

“We put a strong case to the Minister for retaining the Half-Rate Carers Allowance and the Respite Care Grant as priorities, and discussed a number of anomalies,” said local Co-ordinator of Services, Bernie Dowling.

Minister Finneran was very supportive of the points made and promised to talk to the Minister for Social Protection and the Minister for Health whom he knew were “both very much aware of the work of Carers”.

Minister Finneran T.D. stated

“I would like to commend the Roscommon Carer’s Association on their dedication and wonderful work down through the years on behalf of the people in Roscommon.    I have listened carefully to their views and they can be assured that I will personally discuss their concerns with the relevant Government Ministers”

The Carers Association will make a full pre-Budget presentation for Oireachtas Members in Leinster House on October 13, which the Minister indicated he would attend.
