Minister Áine Brady TD invites older people to have their say.

The Minister for Older People and Health Promotion, Áine Brady TD today said that she is beginning a series of meetings around the country to hear first hand the views of older people on issues that affect them. The meetings are a further part of the Minister’s work to develop a new Positive Ageing Strategy. The Minister said that the new Strategy will set the direction for future policies, programmes and services for older people in Ireland.

“The Government wants to make sure that the position of older people in Irish society is recognised and appreciated,” the Minister said. The Minister noted that she was particularly keen to hear the views of older people themselves about the barriers they experience in their day to day lives and how these affect them as well as their ability to participate in their communities. Some of this, she suggested, arose from ageist attitudes and practices and quite often people were not even conscious of these.

The Minister added that her call for submissions to the National Positive Ageing Strategy had been very successful. 186 submissions had been received from a broad range of agencies and organisations as well as individual older people from all over Ireland. She now wants to follow that up with face to face meetings around the country. She is planning to have eight meetings in all over the coming months.

Family Caregiving - "Exploring Key Issues" Forum

The Waterford Office commissioned research to be undertaken by Dr Paula Lane Lecturer with Waterford Institute of Technology. The research aimed to explore the “Key Issues” in relation to Family Caregiving. The research was funded by Pobal and was commissioned so that The Carers Association in Waterford could use it to access funding towards addressing the deficits highlighted.

The Carers Committee in Waterford, (who are piloting a branch structure) coordinated a platform for the outcomes of the research to be discussed and highlighted. The structure of the day went as follows;-

The Lord Mayor of Waterford City opened the day with a story of his own experience of a caring role which he took on for a short period of time and one that had a huge impact on him. He concluded that Carers need to shout the loudest to get what they are rightly entitled to. Maurice O’Connor full-time Carer and Board Member of The Carers Association presented the “job” of caring and the practicalities of doing the work. He highlighted the emotional and physical strain associated with the role and called for anyone to take up on the job advertisement for a “Carer”. A visual display followed which was presented by Lesley Anne Kavanagh from the Brothers of Charity. Local Waterford people from the Brothers of Charity and actors from the city performed a well told story of one person’s plight to be cared -for after his main Carer /Mother passed away. This highlighted the assumptions that people make when they think they know what people need as opposed to asking the person what they need. Dr Paula Lane presented the findings of the research and the recommendations she made. The report can be accessed from The Carers Association in Waterford.

The audience then had an opportunity to get involved in discussions with the multidisciplinary team which comprised of;- Dr Ethna Brenner GP , Cllr David Cullinane, Human Rights Lawyer Amanda Hayes, Brian O’Shea T.D. and Catherine Cox of The Carers Association. Topics such as Fair Deal, Government commitment e.g The National Carers Strategy, Carers Health and Wellbeing & Finances etc., were discussed.

The attendees were treated to finger food and refreshments sponsored by the Head of Nursing Department Dr John Wells. A well earned break was had until three workshops formed to discuss the issues of the Mental health of Carers, Physical health of Carers and the Supports for Carers. The forum hoped to have one issue that could be addressed by the community over the next year from each of the workshop. The following were the recommendations;-

Supports;- All supports need to be in place before a patient is sent home from hospital. We need to have solutions that are researched, cost effective and cohesive with a collective approach.

Mental health ;- An advocate for carers, more me time, counselling, lobbying, a Minister for Carers, time out and help when especially when Carer is ill.

Physical health;- Partnership approach with support from the voluntary organisations, Regular time out and regular health checks.

The Forum concluded with a raffle – prizes sponsored from various local businesses.
